Crossing the State Line

One way to cross the state line of Rhode Island and Massachusetts by water involves navigating Mount Hope Bay.  Heading northeast from the Rhode Island side of Mount Hope Bay to the Massachusetts side, the Mount Hope Bay main shipping channel leads into the mouth of the Taunton River.

A fun bit of Rhode Island and Massachusetts trivia comes to light in comparing the two extant naval vessels that are named after the two states.

The USS Massachusetts (BB-59) is a South Dakota class battleship and veteran of World War II.  She was decommissioned in 1947.  Since 1965 she's been a museum ship, berthed at her current location at Battleship Cove in Fall River, Massachusetts.

The USS Rhode Island (SSBN-740) is an active United States Navy Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine that was commissioned in 1994.

I love the head on view of the USS Massachusetts (BB-59).  She is one of two extant South Dakota Class Battleships, the other extant South Dakota Class Battleship is the Alabama (BB-60).  Photo by Captain Bill Podzon.  Sailing Hither and Thither.

Massachusetts is my home state, but Newport is my current home port, so back down Mount Hope Bay (from Massachusetts back to Rhode Island) and Narragansett Bay I make way.
