Last Friday nights wind shift (from no wind at all to a Northeast breeze) marked as I would define, The End of the Summer of 2016. The air temperature had been in the 80's for most of that previous week, but then the Northeast wind blew and with it, down went the thermometer.
One guy called that warm spell spooky. He said the word spooky at least two times, and I think he had a cloudy glow to his eyes which still makes me think of another guy I met years ago who had the cloudy glow in his eyes and usually spoke of impending doom. The tone and timbre, the psychic pain in my shoulder blades. The more recent cloudy eyed guy muttered something about global warming or human caused climate change. This guy spoke before the wind shift came.
I'd say, from my humble experience, that this phenomena is an annual event with a greater or lesser intensity depending upon the speed of the change, in the air temp. The water always lags behind, slower to change.
It has been a rather warm summer in these parts on the Bay of the Narragansetts, and this warm summer hath also warmed the bay, the water. But then we had the quickdrop in air temp and the water responded by saying, not so fast.
Since that wind shift and temp drop of Friday evening the difference has been diminishing, the difference between the air and water temperatures. But on those first couple of days after the air temp drop the difference was striking. Take a swim to warm up!
