A SANTANA 22 RIGGED AS A CUTTER YAWL OR CUTTER KETCH, SAILING ON SAN FRANCISCO BAY BACK IN 2003 OR 2004 came to mind when my eyes espied a yawl rigged Pearson Triton on Mount Hope Bay recently.
Did not Joshua Slocum re-rig his sloop Spray somewhere along the way of his solo circumnavigation? He converted spray from a sloop to a yawl or ketch, or maybe he cut the mizzen mast off? I'll have to re-read that one of these days, or years.
Then I remember hearing through the grapevine of an intrepid sailor I know who cut or added a mast on a Fuji ketch. And oh yes, the Cal 46. Didn't many folks add a mizzen to that boat?
That all writ, I say I have no designs on adding a mast to my Albin Vega. I like the way she sails.
No wind during my diddley-boppin' on Mount Hope Bay. The auxiliary outboard provided
the propulsion. She Sails Better Than She Motors I've heard many times. She Motors Better Than She Sails I've never heard. Even the fastest of sailboats need some wind, right?
Fair Winds.
