Moon Over Goat Island

After having a little fun with my 7 year old laptop computers' photo editing capabilities I have for you a photo of the moon over Goat Island.  Thoughts of B rated Sci-Fi movies from the early days of color photography come to mind.

Moon over Goat Island (or, "SAILBOATS TAKE OVER THE UNIVERSE"  if looked at from a B rated Sci-Fi perspective).  June, 2015.

I did finally go for a sail for the first time in 2015, about a week ago.  About time I KNOW, for one considering the name of this blog, and for another to remind myself that I do own a sailboat; a sailboat that sails rather nicely.

Towards the end of last summer I purchased a new/used jib to replace the long worn to eventually blowing out genoa that I've had since time immemorial.  Well, over the years many people have told me how much better a boat sails with new sails and the other day I was indeed convinced of that truth.  It brought to mind the notion, "Oh yeah, the Albin Vega 27 did hold the record for crossing the Atlantic."

Also, with more conviction than I thought I knew I had I thought, "IT'S TIME FOR A NEW MAIN."  Yeah, I guess once a taste of the sweet nectar comes around there's no turning back.  So today I visited the used sails room at a local marine used parts store and found nothing that fit, ugh.  Perhaps I'll go into ultra frugal mode and save my pennies for a brand new (oh my God) main.

Did I just think that?

BRAND NEW MAIN?

Whoa, I think I'm starting to sweat.

On Monday of this week, the day when the rains came and poured over the land, harbor, bay and sea, I was making way across Newport Harbor when, not too far east of Fort Adams my eyes did espy a fin of about 1 to 2 feet in height pop out of the rain pattered water.

"Did I just see that or am I tripping?"  was my first impression as the fin slipped below.  A couple of nights earlier I watched JAWS for the first time since 1975, yes I was way too scared all those years in between to watch it again.  I actually thought this time around that the movie was pretty funny.  I also had alot of empathy for Chief Brody in his having to deal with all those opinions coming at him.  You know,  like when he got slapped in the face by the mother of the child eaten by the shark after getting an earful from the Mayor of Amity on not wanting to lose business due to beach closures, etc...

Then the fin popped up again and I thought, "That is indeed a fin."  Kind of a big floppy fin, no tail-fin so no shark (I hoped?) and no blow hole from a dolphin.  So I felt safe to maneuver over to take a closer look and see this big round thing lumbering along not too far below the surface.

Well, I could be wrong, but my guess is that it was an Ocean Sunfish.  I'd heard reports of them sighted out by Castle Hill or Beavertail.  I also saw one at the Monterrey Bay Aquarium, back in 2007 I think.

A little while later I mentioned the sighting to someone with some knowledge on the subject and he asked, "Big floppy fin?"

"Yeah, big floppy fin."
