Volvo Ocean Race Newport

NEWPORT REPRESENTS!  My goodness did people come out to see this incredible event!  I knew that NEWPORT LOVED SAILING but now I REALLY KNOW NEWPORT LOVES SAILING!

Volvo Ocean Race Fleet departing Newport on May 17, 2015 and bound for Lisbon.
This event had a buzz the likes of which I have not felt in a long time.  How do I compare the vibe?  Some memorable rock concerts come to mind;  Aerosmith at the Orpheum Theater December 31, 1984,  the Grateful Dead in Foxboro July, 1989, Dave Holland any time he takes the stage at the Jazz Festival.

Ah, but this is SAILING!

I know, I may seem a little over the top with the superlatives (and maybe dating myself with the spine tingling comparisons) but really, this event was very cool.

As I write this the VOR Fleet is on-route to Lisbon.  A few years ago I met an English guy named Dennis who departed Newport in May bound for Britain in an Albin Vega.  Shortly after he departed, a friend told me that May is one of the best times of year for a trans Atlantic crossing.  More recently, a few days ago there were a fair number of British flagged boats in Newport Harbor, one of which had spent time in the Arctic.  Now the British flagged boats are gone.
