"Will the America's Cup ever return to Newport?" A question I often get asked. My initial response is, "Does anyone around here have the guts to go up against Larry Ellison?"
I've never gotten an answer to that question.
Continuing the thread, I then tend to get anecdotal in a warm and fuzzy way. "The Red Sox did eventually win the World Series after 86 years. If Newport follows that trend then we should see the cup back here in 2069. That's 86 years after 1983 or 55 years from 2014. I'll be over 100 years old in 2069 and probably dead but there''ll be many alive today who'll be around when Newport gets the cup back in 2069.
Then I think, between 2014 and 2069...
Will a Swedish team win the America's Cup?
Will a British team win the America's Cup and overcome the Thomas Lipton curse? The Red Sox did eventually overcome the curse of the Bambino.
Will an Italian team win the America's Cup?
Will a French team win the America's Cup?
Will a team from Australia win the cup again?
Will a team from New Zealand win the cup again?
Will a team from Switzerland win the cup again?
Continuing my speculations on the AC future, if the current crew members of an AC boat need to have the physical health of a Navy Seal then what will an America's Cup 2069 crew members physical capabilities need to be and what will the AC boats of 2069 look like?
Broadening the future speculation sphere a little further...
Will Newton's "Principia" be deemed silly superstition by 2069?
Will sailing overtake soccer at the world's most popular sport by 2069?
Will the 3D printers of 2069 put the shipping industry out of business?
Meanwhile, while we wait for the AC to return to Newport in 2069 we continue to enjoy sailing 12 meter yachts, J-22's, J-24's, J's, Herreschoff S-boats, Pearson's, Pacific Seacraft's, Bristol's, Hunter's, Catalina's, Beneteau's, Shannon's, Beetle Cat's, Shield's, Ensign's, Schooner's, Sloop's, Yawl's, Opti's, 420's, Oday's, 2.4's, Cal's, C&C's, Brigantine's, Barquentine's, Cutter's, Sunfish's, Laser's, plastic boats, wooden boat's, steel boats, super-light super-strong space age material boats, moth's, Rhode's (in Rhode Island as with the rest of the fleet).
Meanwhile, while we're eagerly awaiting the return of the AC to Newport in 2069 we shall continue to allow the wind to move the boat. We shall also continue to enjoy reefing early and often unless a quick squall arises or we're racing. With the quick squall we broach and fill the cockpit with sea water hoping it'll empty quick enough. With racing, well, it's racing.
